Sharing my trailer on Twitter

Twitter is an online social networking service that enables users to send and read short 140-character messages called "tweets". It is estimated that there are over 251 million monthly active twitter users meaning that if I released my media products via a 'tweet', I could have the chance to communicate with a mass audience and gain feedback.

The screenshot below shows the tweet I sent out to my followers providing the link to the trailer for 'Royal Blood'

Audience Feedback

I held a small screening of my trailer in front of three peers to gain audience feedback.

They each shared their thoughts on the trailer in the short interviews below.

Poster as imagined on a billboard

I used PhotoFunia to produce this image of what my poster would look like as an advertisement on a billboard.

Final Poster

One of my two ancillary tasks was to create a film poster to accompany my trailer. My main inspiration was the poster for Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Magazine Cover as imagined on the front of a real magazine

I used PhotoFunia to create this image of what my magazine cover would look like on the front of a real magazine, as I did for my other ancillary task, the film poster.

Contact Sheet - Ancillary Task 2 - Poster

For my film poster I decided to take a variety of pictures from different lengths and angles, with Jack doing different poses to give me a range of options. The sunlight on the day was helpful and ensured that the pictures were clear.

Contact Sheet - Ancillary Task 1 - Magazine Cover

In order to create a realistic looking magazine cover I took a variety of shots with Jack performing a number of different poses. I was particularly lucky with the lighting as it was a bright, clear, sunny day which meant that Jack's face was not too shrouded by shadow and therefore the images can be used with a different background on the magazine cover.

Soundtrack Choice

The soundtrack is an especially important feature of a trailer as it helps to capture the tone of the film that is being advertised and also serves as a way of attracting the audience's attention. Furthermore, it can add weight to quotes and soundbites from the film as well as action scenes.

For my trailer, I chose the music from the trailer for the 2014 video game Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor (Tenth Dimension - My Strife, My Fight, My Fear) as my soundtrack. I wanted a soundtrack that began fairly calmly and slowly built up to a climax, as my trailer is composed in the same way; the start is mainly dialogue, while the second half is predominantly composed of action sequences. It was also suitable as Shadow of Mordor is similar in genre to my production and in many ways falls into the category of action/adventure, although it is also very fantasy-oriented unlike my trailer.

Development of the Web Case Study

A fellow student and I produced this video as part of our case study on the development of the Web.

We tweeted the video to David Gauntlett, an influential figure in the subject of the Web, and received a response, which is shown in the screenshots below:

Gauntlett then wrote a blog post in response to us mistakenly labelling him the creator of the word 'prosumer', and his clarification was especially useful to us as we may well have misquoted him again in the future. A screenshot of his blog post is below:

Start of Editing

I have started the editing process for my trailer using Final Cut Pro and have pieced together the initial few scenes. I edited my film.

Above is some of the footage from my second shoot which will make up the first few scenes in my trailer. It can be seen that I attempted several takes from different angles for the two scenes after the fireplace shot to give me a wider range of options to choose from when editing. Some of the angles I used may not be used in the final production.

Here is a screenshot of what I have edited so far.

Audience Research - Results

For the first question,  everyone who answered was either a teenager or a young adult, which is the audience that I am predominantly aiming to appeal to, and therefore their answers in this survey were particularly helpful.

For the second question, Comedy was comfortably the most popular genre, while the genres that my trailer is most linked to - Drama and Action - were selected by just one person each. This has encouraged me to incorporate other genres into my trailer.

The answer for the third question was unanimous - everyone who took the survey saw narrative as the most important factor in a film trailer, and has influenced me to focus most on that particular area.

The most popular option for the fourth question was also my preferred time frame for a trailer and was how long I planned to make mine last and therefore the results for this question were encouraging.

Question 5 was also unanimously answered, with everyone who took the survey agreeing that they usually watch trailers on YouTube. Although I was already planning to put my trailer on YouTube, the answers to this question have

Institutions that might produce and distribute my film

Seeing as my film would include large scale action sequences and a number of different settings, it would require a fairly large budget, and this is usually the case for films in the historical genre.

The leading distributor for the high-grossing films that are similar to mine is Warner Bros. Examples of these films include 300, The Hobbit trilogy, The Last Samurai, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Alexander and Troy although many of them are more action and fantasy oriented than my film.

Costume and Props

Due to the historical setting of my trailer, the costumes and props will be crucial in its construction, and therefore it was the area in which I spent most money.

Costume

Below is the costume that I ordered for the protagonist in my trailer and the one he will predominantly be seen wearing throughout. It was suitable as it is specifically made to look medieval, with a coat of arms on the torso which is in the style of a typical contemporary English coat of arms, which would have been born by someone born into a noble family, which is the case in my trailer seeing as the protagonist is a prince.

Props

Fake Blood - This will be used for the battle scenes at the end of the trailer.

Swords - I have three swords that will be used in the production of my trailer. One is plastic and will be used as the sword that the dying king hands to his son at the start of the trailer. The other two are metal but blunt, and therefore ideal for shooting fighting scenes, which is what they will be used for. The villain will wield the larger of the two swords in his fight against the protagonist to create an underdog image for the hero.
